North of Tbilisi, the Georgian Military Highway climbs through the Aragvi valley, past the Ananuri fortress and the ski slopes of Gudauri, over the Jvari Pass and down into Stepantsminda — the small town everyone still calls Kazbegi. Above it, on a bare green ridge, stands the fourteenth-century Gergeti Trinity Church, with the glaciated cone of Mount Kazbek behind it when the clouds agree.
It’s the most photographed view in Georgia, and it earns it. But the region rewards slowing down: side valleys like Sno and Juta, waterfalls an easy walk from the road, and long lunches with mountain views.
Why go with a local host
- The weather window matters more than the schedule — locals know when to leave and when to swap the order of stops.
- The final climb to Gergeti is by 4×4 or on foot; we arrange the right option for your group.
- Roadside stops (Ananuri, the Friendship Monument, mineral springs) are easy to miss at bus pace.
