Gergeti Trinity Church on a grassy ridge with the snow-capped peak of Mount Kazbek behind it

Highlights

  • Gergeti Trinity Church with Mount Kazbek behind it — the view Georgia is famous for
  • The Georgian Military Highway: Ananuri fortress, Zhinvali reservoir, Gudauri panoramas
  • Time built in for the weather window — we chase the view, not the clock
  • Lunch in a local mountain guesthouse, not a coach-tour canteen
  • Private car, your pace: photo stops whenever you want them

Some drives justify a whole trip. The road north from Tbilisi climbs out of vineyards into the high Caucasus in barely three hours — and ends beneath a fourteenth-century church on a ridge, with a five-thousand-metre peak filling the sky behind it.

Because the day is private, it bends: leave earlier to beat the clouds, linger at the pass, skip a stop for a longer lunch. Our hosts drive this road week after week and read its moods well.

The route

  1. Stop 1Tbilisi → Ananuri

Morning pickup from your stay. First leg along the Aragvi valley to the lakeside Ananuri fortress — towers, frescoes and a first taste of the mountains ahead.

  2. Stop 2Gudauri viewpoints & Jvari Pass

The road climbs past Gudauri’s slopes to the high point of the highway. Weather permitting, the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument balcony delivers a first big panorama.

  3. Stop 3Stepantsminda (Kazbegi)

Down into the valley town at the foot of Mount Kazbek. Lunch at a family guesthouse — khinkali country begins here.

  4. Stop 4Gergeti Trinity Church

Up the ridge by 4×4, or on foot if your group prefers the hike (about an hour up). Time at the top for the view, the silence and the photographs.

  5. Stop 5Return to Tbilisi

Back over the pass with optional stops we skipped in the morning. Evening drop-off at your stay.

Practical details

Pickup
Pickup from your stay in Tbilisi — exact point and time confirmed in your WhatsApp chat.
Transport
Comfortable sedan or minivan depending on group size; child seats available on request. The final ridge to Gergeti is by local 4×4 or on foot.
Accessibility
Most stops are step-free or near-vehicle. The church sits on a high ridge (around 2,200 m): the 4×4 option keeps walking minimal, but paths are uneven gravel. Tell us about mobility needs and we’ll plan honestly.

Questions about this tour

Where do you pick us up?

For day tours we usually pick you up where you stay in Tbilisi. The exact point and time are agreed in your WhatsApp chat before the trip, so there’s no guesswork on the morning.

What about mountain weather?

Mountain weather changes fast and we plan around it, not against it. For high routes (Kazbegi, Gudauri, Svaneti) we watch the forecast and will suggest reordering days or swapping viewpoints to catch the clear window — that flexibility is a big reason to travel with locals.

How does payment work?

We confirm the full price and payment options in writing on WhatsApp before anything is booked — no surprises on the day. If anything about the plan changes, the price is re-confirmed first.
